1. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities. .25 point
By taking a closer look at two of Californias inland areas I am able to look at certain cultures and aspects of California that may not be as well known or popular as the coastal areas. This particular study connects to our study of humanities because it focuses on a different side of California apart from its beaches that has inspired many artists and people in general to flock to our beautiful state.

2. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:

a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
I believe that when people think of Santa Rosa they think of the vineyards and winerys. They may tend to confuse Santa Rosa with surronding towns such as healdsburg and Rohnert Park, possibly combining the areas into one location. As for McCloud, people may seem to think that it has nothing to offer other than outdoor sports. They may also find McCloud to be like a small town setting that is very open.

b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
1. They both are close to many outdoor activities.
2. They both attract many visitors.
3. McCloud and Santa Rosa are both in well known areas but are not the most well known towns in either.

c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
1. McCloud is a small town and Santa Rosa is a little larger.
2. McCloud is surronded by lakes and mountains.
3. Santa Rosa is closer to the ocean.

d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
I know that Santa Rosa has attracted a few famous residents, but has McCloud ever been home to anyone that is famous?

3. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? Link that persons blog to this entry (eg cut paste that blog entry here) . .5 point
I chose to look at Alissa Sillars blog on beaches. I learned that Bolinas beach has the stereotype that it is not a very welcoming town. I have heard this rumor before and have even had people who once lived there confirm that the rumor is close to true. It is very interesting to me that there would be a town that would try to keep people from visiting it. In our culture today I feel people should be more welcoming and accepting. By keeping people out it may keep an ideal but it also feeds the fire of feeling different.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodega_Bay

1. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities. .25 point
These two beaches represent our study of humanities because they are a place for people from all different backgrounds to come together. People travel from all over to go to californias beaches where they partake in many activties such as surfing or simply building a sand castle. Beaches are a great way to bring families and strangers closer, adding to the rich culture in our world.

2. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
I think that people might assume Seal Beach is always beautiful. Beacuse it is in Southern California people might also expect everyone there to have great bodies and be very young. As for Bodega Bay I think people might think that it is not as exciting as a southern California beach because it is on the colder side. People also might expect there to only be older people there.

b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
1. Both beaches attract many people.
2. People surf in both locations.
3. Both places are family friendly and there are many activities to do at both.

c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
1. Seal beach is a southern california beach while Bodega Bay is a northern california beach.
2. It is usually warmer at Seal beach than it is at Bodega bay.
3. People tend to go into the water more at seal beach and partake in more water activities whereas at Bodega bay people tend to stay on the beach more.

d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
Surfing is a huge event in Seal Beach. I wonder why this particular beach became so famous for it?

This week I chose to look at Oksana Pensabene's blog on world cities. I learned that both San Francisco and L.A. were founded by Spanish settlers. I never knew this fact before and I find it very interesting considering I live so close to San Francisco. My whole life I have never really considered how the places I live were founded and to know that a different culture than my own laid the foundation for one of my favorite cities is very eye opening.

3a World Cities

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland,_California
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_Zoo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tijuana

1. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities. .25 point
Both Oakland and San Diego are home to an extremely diverse population. San Diego sits right near the border of Tijuana, Mexico opening up a means of great cultural sharing between the two different countries. Oakland in turn, is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the U.S. having over 150 different languages spoken within its limits. Both of these cities relate to our study of humanities because both represent great cultural sharing and coexisting of people from different backgrounds.
Also Oakland is home to many museums and a great zoo that help to preserve our past and future while San Diego is known to be the ninth most educated city in the U.S. showing how much emphasis is placed on education there.

2. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
I believe many people stereotype Oakland as being a rough place to live due to gang activity and such. Also I believe people tend to think soley of the football team the Raiders when they think of Oakland. When people think of San Diego I believe the first thing that pops into their heads is the beaches. The stereotype of laid back surfers and constant beautiful weather would have to be the assumption I'm most familiar with.

b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
1. They are both ranked in the top ten largest cities in California.
2. They both are extremely diverse and highly populated cities.
3. Both cities are located near the ocean.

c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
1. Oakland has a high crime rate while San Diego's is on the lower side.
2. Oakland is located in North California and San Diego is in South California.
3. San Diego is a larger city than Oakland.

d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
Oakland and San Diego are both large cities, with San Diego being the larger of the two. With this fact in mind why is it that Oakland actually has a higher crime rate than San Diego?

5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. I chose to look at Alissa Sillars 2c assignment on the golden gate bridge. I learned that those who constructed the Golden Gate bridge were told that it would be impossible to do so yet they suceeded anyway over 70 years ago. This was very interesting to me because though I have crossed the bridge hundreds of times I never really knew much about it. Now I see that the bridge is much more than my way of simply getting to San Francisco. The Golden Gate Bridge actually gathers people of all different nationalities to view it every year bringing individuals that other wise may never meet, close together.

2c California language

*Contains the sources you used with links to these sources .25 points
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_California
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_English

1. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point

California, like much of America, is very unique because it is a melting pot for people of all different cultures. Because of this diversity there are so many languages that can be heard anywhere you turn. "California Language" connects to our study of humanities because it shows how people from all over the world can coexist and communicate with each other despite the language barrier. I also find that the diverse amount of languages in California make it a place of learning were people can teach and learn from each other much like Freire strived for in his lifetime.

2. Contains the following "analytical elements":
a. Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point

I chose to take a look at the languages of California. Everytime I walk down the street I hear people speaking to each other. Sometimes what they are saying I cannot comprehend even though, strangely enough, it may be in English. I am constantly hearing new words that are meant to describe emotions or actions and each time I learn a new one I have to think about it for awhile and figure out how I can incorporate it myself into my language. Ontop of new english words constantly being introduced I find that many people use words from different languages combined with their native tongue. These combinations of words have often been given names of their own such as "Spanglish". When I witness this mix of new and foreign words I feel strange that, even though it is not my language or something I am familiar with, I can understand it. I am proud that I can coexist and understand so many different forms of speech.

b. Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point

California is the home to many different languages including English, Spanish, Chinese and a less officially accepted language known as California english which includes a distinct dialect. The languages spoken in California represent the long and diverse history of the state and the people that have and do reside in it.

c. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point

I chose to look at the languages of California because it has always fascinated me when I heard the people all around me speaking in various dialects. I also always found it interesting when I listened to those closest to me. Some of my friends speak two languages while others are strong in one but still use phrases and words from another language when speaking. I personally love immersing myself in different cultures and trying to understand what is going on and is being said. Many of my family members speak many different languages for my family is very diverse so studying the languages of the people around me is almost like studying my different heritages.

d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point

Spanish is the second most prevalent language in California. What was the second most prevalent language spoken twenty years ago?

5. I chose to look at Carly Overlids blog on San Francisco. I learned that San Francisco is one of Californias largest cities as well as one of the largest cities in America. It has a population of 764,976 people, having one of the most diverse populations in the world. I feel this is related to our class because we focus on diversity and how cultures can learn and connect with each other. With so many different people in one place people can teach and learn everyday simply because they are neck deep in different cultures. San Francisco also houses a huge amount of cultural history that is very important to our society.
