The Exploratorium relates to our study of humanities because it combines many aspects of our culture into one place. Not only does the exploratorium offer interactive science exhibits but it also offers many visual arts for people to take in. It brings people together as well for some of the exhibits have people working with one another or at least interacting on the same thing. The museum brings people from all different cultures together helping them to learn through a hands on process instead of simply having to read and memorize the information presented.

a. Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point
I chose the Exploratorium. Pushing through the doors I sigh a little sigh of relief. I have finally been able to reach my destination after standing in line behind a visiting school, a rather common obstacle that stands between those coming to the exploratorium on their own and the building itself. None to my surprise I am met with hundreds more people within the museum, bustling about and talking loudly trying to out speak the people next to them. Upon my first observations that disregard the other people I notice the establishment has two stories, both lined with odd contraptions. Children and adults alike are laughing and playing with the strange set-ups. It's all so much to take in that I feel as though I can only make out bright and abundants colors mixed with the constant products of the experiments being conducted.
b. Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point
The exploratorium was created by Frank Oppenheimer, a man who believed that science should be fun. Oppenheimers mission still shines through in the establishment today as can be seen by the thousands of people who visit the exploratorium each year and often return throughout their lives. The exploritorium was also created in order for people of all ages to enjoy and benefit from the experiances offered. It gives people the chance to learn but still be playing which often helps individuals to retain information. Through the hands on science exhibits, the exploratorium offers the ability for "students" to teach themselves rather than listen to lectures on how something should work.
c. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point
I have visited the Exploratorium many times in my life either with my science classes or with my family. Each time I have learned many surprising and new things that, had I learned in the classroom I more than likely would have forgotten. I feel that the exploratorium is a great place for people to learn and grow especially in the sciences, which is often a scary subject for some. I think that those lucky enough to go will be able to pik up valuable if not fun information that they can proud to know. Overall the exploratorium is a great to tool to our society.
d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point
Frank Oppenheimer created the exploratorium to make science fun for all ages. I wonder what dorve him to want to make science fun for people?

Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? I chose to read Sheena Dudleys blog on Cabo San Lucas. I learned that historically some believe that Cabo was the landing spot for the first humans 14,000 years ago on the southern end of the peninsula. I also learned that cabo provides a look at the intellectual skills and knowledge of the Mexican culture. All of this relates to our class because it is taking a look at a culture other than our own and letting us gain information on them. By being able to gain an idea of the Mexican cultures intellectual skills we are given the opportunity to better understand a different cultures education system.

Though at first one might not think that Monterey would stand out amongst the rest of the more colorful cities of California it is actually quite well known for being a center for artists and all forms of art. Since the late 19th century authors, painters and actors alike have come to the city to produce their meaningful contribution to our culture. This has lead to the attraction of a very diverse population. The rich culture of Monterey has even lead to it being given the name "the language capitol of the world" by some, for its work in learning other languages and providing translators. I feel Monterey connects to our studies of humanities due to its great emphasis on art and diverse culture which are key elements in this particular area of study. I also feel that the effort put out by the town to train translators relates to our class because it shows an effort on individuals behalves to try and help others that may need their services in order to better our
world.

As I pull into Monterey I first make note of the expansive ocean right infront of me. It's a cloudy day and the usual overcast yet slightly sunny weather welcomes me back to my favorite town. As I pull my car into a parking space down at the beach parking lot I quickly open my door and rejoice at the cool ocean air rushing up to nip at my face. The sounds of seagulls crying out and the somewhat fishy smell that always seems to linger about reaches my senses, delivering the final touches to my arrival in the town. Shutting my door and walking quickly over to the large pier that runs out from the beach I glance down at the water. I spot a family of otters splashing about literally under my feet. Its a wonderful sight to see, for, though I have seen the little creatures once or twice, it is still a sight not observed as often as I would please. Looking back up I notice the beach is lined with houses, all placed just far enough away from the sand and waves.
Not many people are out today on the beach, although not an overwhelming amount ever seem to be. The few people and dogs that I do spot however are milling about lazily kindly waving or nodding at each other as they pass.

Monterey is a very laid back town. Due to its friendly nature people seem attracted to it. While it may seem like a lazy vacation spot there is much to do there. Monterey is home to the famous Cannery Row sometimes recognized by some due to John Steinbecks novel titled after it. Most all of the canneries that once lined the street are no longer in business anymore but that doesn't mean the street is dead by any means for it is now a large tourist attraction housing many hotels and restaurants. Also Monterey is the home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium notably known for its research on deep-sea marine life. It is one of the largest aquariums in the world to date.

I chose Monterey because I fell in love with the city when I first visited it. I love the diverse group of people and the kind atmosphere the town has to offer. I am especially interested in the study of marine life and since Monterey puts such a huge focus on the study I always get to learn information everytime I visit. What lead me to further pick this town was the fact that it did house so much art history which is essential to our culture. As most people do, I enjoy all forms of art and when I discovered that many well known artists had once resided in the town I was very intrigued.

I chose to look at Danielle Petersons blog post for assignment 1b. I learned that Paulo Friere believed if colonizers and those colonized had limits put on on them that both parties would be dehumanized, removing the ability for dialogue to occur. He was very much concerned with the relationship between action and values. Personally I find that when someone is given a limit or told that something will be hard or near impossible for them to do, while they might try, their full effort is never put forth. Like Freire I feel that people should be lifted to their full potential. I feel that this class relates to this concept because since everyone must share and do equal work we are all learning from each other and in the process benefiting from each other rather than setting limits.

Assignment 1c
The first blog I chose to read was Jessica Bozzettos. I learned that she is taking this humanities class because she would like to learn about other cultures and the people that she lives around. From her post on Paulo Freire I first learned that Freires life as a child was one of poverty that later lead him to fight against hunger, and even further down the line would lead to all of the acomplishments he achieved. I also learned that Paulo Freires ideas had a global impact rather than just affecting Brazil. He traveled all over the world working as an educator and trying to help those in need of him. I feel this information relates to our class because it shows how many cultures can be in need of the same assistance. No mater where in the world one lives we all have similar struggles.
The second blog I chose to read was Jeana Wiemeyers. I learned she views California as a very diverse place in culture, landscape and weather. The first thing I learned from her blog on Paulo Freire was that Freire believed that to be educated was more than simply acquiring knowledge. He felt students should learn to make a difference in the world instead of just learning facts. The second thing I learned was that Freire believed people should work together and help each other learn instead of being lectured or talked at. He felt that students and teachers alike could benefit from each other instead of a one-sided relationship. I feel that what I learned connects to our class because it shows that even people from other cultures value the same things as our culture does.

Paulo Freire is well known for his contribution of his philosophy of education, which roots stem from Plato, anti-colonist and marxist theories. His ideas centered heavily around students and the learning process in which they gained their knowledge. One thing he was best known for was his disagreement with the "banking" process of education. This concept was one that viewed students as empty and devoid of knowledge, ready for a teacher to fill. Though citicism of this concept was not new, for many did not agree with facts being the foundation of education, Freire approached the situation in a new way. By using the current education system and theories apparent at the time he updated the idea and helped pave the way for the concept of critical pedagogy which teaches students how to challenge beliefs and practices that dominate at the time.
Freires strong dislike of the student-teacher relatationship of his time presents another concept he is well known for. He believed it should be completely thrown out and done away with. His idea was that students and teachers should teach and learn from each other instead of strictly following by their traditional roles. However his idea to abolish the teaching and learning process was one that would be hard to rid of, for parents often taught their children as well. Even then though Freire simply wanted any teacher-student relationship to be equal, giving both individuals a chance to cooperate with each other. In a sense, Freire wanted there to be a sort of democracy in the classroom based on both students and teachers benefiting from each other.
Throughout his life Paulo Freire strived to give educational freedom to those oppressed. His main goal was to give those in need of education the ability to think critically and be conscious. In Brazil, where he was born, literacy was required for one if they wanted to vote. Freire recognized this and putting his theories into use was able to teach 300 illetrate workers to write and read in a mere 45 days. The military of Brazil put an end to his work however and sent him to jail and exile. Despite all of this Freire continued his work and contribution to society by writing many well known books including his most well known piece PEDAGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED. Overall Paulo Freire wanted the world of education to simply work and coexist respectfully, ontop of that he wanted to provide strong and useful education itself to all that needed it.
